Mertsch won the German Cross in Gold in September 1943 and would go on to be the artillery commander of  XIII SS-Armeekorps and finished the war commanding a Kampfgruppe in Czechoslovakia

He saw service in the Boer War as a member of the Army Pay Corps with the British forces and was awarded the QSA and KSA for his service

PEEKHAUS BERLIN" and maker marked F L L (for Friedrich Linden, Ldenscheid), slightly vaulted, good quality clasp with good details and plating, slightly worn, magnetic plate replaced (not original), hinge shows signs of repair, otherwise in good condition.
