A geographer and traveler, contemporary with Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, with a very solid classical education, Pausanias was familiar with the great ancient texts, but also with the scholarly literature of his century. He explored Greece, Macedonia, Italy, Asia Minor, Syria and part of Africa before settling in Rome around 174. It was there that he wrote his work in ten books, which he called
